Description
This interactive virtual program will highlight the most important aspects of nonprofit governance from both the board and board member perspectives. Participants will gain an understanding of the board's role in the absence of staff, resources available to assist them in that role, and an opportunity to review and consider best practices from across the sector. Each participant will receive Maryland Nonprofits’ Board Excellence Handbook.
Topics Covered include:
- Duality of the board members’ role in an all-volunteer organization
- Legal and social accountability
- Principles for sound financial management
- The board's role in fundraising
- The role of the board as "supervisor.”
- Conflicts of interest
- Attributes of an exceptional board member
- Board operations: recruitment, meetings, engagement
- How roles shift if you choose to add management staff
Registration
You will submit one registration for your organization, and two to three individuals can attend. We ask that you do not attend this training if at least two representatives from your organization cannot participate.
Members: $149 per organization
NDC: $49 per organization
Non-members: $249 per organization

*If your organization has management staff, please register for the staffed organization session on May 15th.
This is a virtual program utilizing Zoom. Some groups have found it productive to have participants from their organization come together at a single location (an organization’s office, a library meeting room, someone’s home or office, etc.) This program will not be recorded. Only those registered should be in attendance, please.
Class Materials
Each participant will receive Maryland Nonprofits’ Board Excellence Handbook (a $25 value), which will be shipped in the mail prior to the course date. We will mail to the addresses provided at registration. To receive your book before the class starts, you must register by May 14, 2025. To change your mailing address, contact learning@mdnonprofit.org by this date. Books that must be shipped twice due to an incorrect address can be mailed to you for an additional fee of $40.
Maryland Nonprofit’s Equity Scholarships:
We are offering a limited number of scholarships to Maryland Nonprofits Members who otherwise cannot afford to attend. To request a complimentary registration, send an email with the session title to learning@mdnonprofit.org. Include your name, title/role at your organization, and a brief explanation of the need.

Event Cancellation
If you are no longer able to attend this event, please notify us at learning@mdnonprofit.org . Your advance cancellation notice may give someone else the opportunity to participate in the case that we have reached capacity. You may request a credit voucher for the value of the amount paid if your cancellation is received 3 business days prior to the event date.
